In a special edition DVD commentary subtitle track, the producer said that a cut scene showed all the terrorists wearing identical watches, synchronizing them before ascending in elevators from the garage. This tipped off McClane that Gruber, pretending to be a dumb American executive, was one of the terrorists … when McClane recognized the watch as the same as one of the terrorists he killed and stripped of his weapon, radio, etc.
